General FAQ

What is TakeTaxi?

TakeTaxi helps you translate and communicate destinations for taxis—especially when you don’t speak the local language—so you can get where you’re going with less stress.

How does it work?

You enter a place name or address, then TakeTaxi helps produce a clear destination you can show or copy for your driver. Users on the premium plan will see additional map/location data and translation tools.

Why doesn’t TakeTaxi let me book a taxi?

TakeTaxi is built for the moment when a taxi is already in front of you. In Hong Kong, the fastest option is often to simply get in the next available taxi — not open another ride hailing app. The goal is that you can take any taxi you see!

TakeTaxi helps you clearly show the driver where you want to go, so you can take any taxi you see and be on your way. It’s not a ride-hailing app, and it’s not meant to replace one.

Is TakeTaxi a ride-hailing app?

No. TakeTaxi helps you take the taxi that’s already there by showing the driver your destination clearly in Chinese.

Where does TakeTaxi work?

TakeTaxi works best with fixed locations like buildings, addresses, and landmarks. Results may be less consistent for places that change often — such as restaurants, pop-ups, or businesses with multiple locations — or for places known by several different names.

Why do I sometimes get results only in Chinese (or in the “wrong” language)?

Some locations in map databases only have one-language listings (or incomplete listings). When that happens, TakeTaxi may show the best available match—even if it isn’t in your preferred language. If you have spotted an error or bug, please submit a bug report and we'll see what we can do to fix it!

Why is the pin slightly off or the address not perfect?

Map data can be imperfect. Some buildings share similar names, some addresses don’t map cleanly, and some places are pinned to a nearby road entrance rather than the exact door. If something looks off, try:

  • adding a nearby landmark (hotel, mall, MTR station)
  • searching the business name instead of the street address (or vice-versa)
  • using a shorter version of the address (district + building name)
Does TakeTaxi guarantee the driver will go to the right place?

TakeTaxi helps reduce confusion, but it can’t guarantee outcomes—drivers may interpret destinations differently, and map data can be wrong. Always double-check the destination before starting the ride.

How do I verify that Chinese language is installed on my phone for audio (Text-to-Speech)?

To hear Chinese read aloud, your phone needs to have Chinese language support installed for text-to-speech. Most phones already have this, but if audio isn’t playing, follow the steps below.

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap Spoken Content
  4. Tap Voices
  5. Look for Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese)
  6. If it’s not installed, tap it to download the voice
  7. Once installed, restart the app and try playing the audio again.

On Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Accessibility or Language & input (this may vary by device)
  3. Tap Text-to-speech output
  4. Select Speech Services by Google
  5. Tap Language
  6. Make sure Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese, if available) is installed – If not, download it when prompted
  7. After installing, close and reopen the app and test the audio again.

Still not working?

  • Make sure your phone’s media volume is turned up
  • Try restarting your phone
  • Some older devices may not support all Chinese voices
How is the taxi fare estimated?

The estimated taxi fare is an approximation, not a guaranteed price.

Our estimate is based on:

  • Distance of the route
  • Tunnel fees, when the route passes through paid tunnels
  • Red taxis, which are the standard and most common taxis in Hong Kong

Green and blue taxis have lower base fares, so rides in those taxis may cost less than the estimate shown.

Important notes

  • Actual fares may vary due to traffic, waiting time, route changes, or driver choices
  • Some drivers may take alternative routes that affect the final cost
  • The app does not account for tips or discretionary charges
  • The final fare is always determined by the taxi meter at the end of the ride.
Additional disclaimer

TakeTaxi provides estimates and translation tools to assist your journey, but accuracy is not guaranteed. Route data, timing, pricing, and translations may vary due to external factors such as map data, traffic conditions, or system limitations. TakeTaxi is provided as a guidance tool only and should not be relied upon as the sole source of information. Always confirm your destination and fare details directly with your driver before starting your trip.

Pricing, Searches, Limits & Uninstalling

Is TakeTaxi free?

Yes. TakeTaxi is free to use and is supported by ads. We introduced ads—and an optional Premium upgrade—because the app has real, ongoing operating costs (such as maps, servers, and app platform fees). This helps us keep the free version available for everyone while continuing to improve the app. Upgrading is completely optional, and the core functionality of TakeTaxi remains free.

How does the Premium version work?

The optional Premium subscription:

  • removes ads
  • gives you unlimited free searches
  • includes additional travel details, such as estimated cost, time, and distance
  • shows Romanized Cantonese address (useful for those learning Cantonese!)

The monthly subscription supports our local business and is cancellable at anytime via the app store you use.

Why is there a limit on searches?

Each search has real operating costs (map/translation services + hosting). The limit helps keep the free version sustainable while giving frequent users a predictable, ad-free option.

How do refunds work?

If you paid and it isn’t working as expected, contact us and we’ll help. Purchases are processed through the App Store / Google Play, so refunds follow their policies—but we’ll do what we can to make it right and guide you to the correct steps.

What happens if I uninstall the app?

If you uninstall and reinstall TakeTaxi, your free search count will reset back to the initial starting amount.

This is because TakeTaxi does not use user accounts or store personal data on our servers. Your search usage is tracked locally on your device, so removing the app also removes that data.

If you have an active Premium subscription, it will still be recognized after reinstalling as long as you are signed into the same App Store or Google Play account.

Privacy & Data

Do I need an account to use TakeTaxi?

No. TakeTaxi does not require user accounts, logins, or profiles.

Do you store my personal data?

No. TakeTaxi does not store personal or identifiable user data.

Searches, GPS information, and app usage are processed in a way that is not linked to individual users. Because of this, there is no personal data profile associated with you.

What about Favorites?

Favorites are stored only on your device. TakeTaxi does not see, collect, or store your saved places. Also, note that using a favorited place counts as a search for users not a Premium plan.

Can I delete my data?

Because TakeTaxi does not store data in an identifiable or user-linked way, there is no personal data profile to delete.

If you have questions or concerns about privacy, you can contact us at taketaxi.hk@gmail.com and we’ll be happy to explain how data is handled.

Where does TakeTaxi get its address data?

TakeTaxi combines data from multiple reliable sources to provide accurate and useful results.

We use:

  • Hong Kong government–published data for official place names, addresses, and transport information
  • OpenStreetMap (OSM) contributors for certain location data
  • Information published directly by businesses, schools, hotels, institutions, and other destinations
  • Google services for mapping, routing, distance calculations, and location display
  • A custom, continuously improving TakeTaxi database that helps refine results and fill in gaps

Because data quality and availability can vary by location and language, some results may occasionally be incomplete or less precise. We’re actively improving this over time. If you encounter an incorrect or confusing result, you can tell us—your feedback helps make TakeTaxi better for everyone.
